Code P0762 Description
The diagnostic trouble code P0762 indicates that the shift solenoid 'C' is stuck on in the transmission. The shift solenoids play a crucial role in controlling the flow of transmission fluid and determining the gear ratios in an automatic transmission. When the shift solenoid 'C' is stuck on, it means that the transmission is unable to properly shift gears, leading to various performance issues.
Common Causes of P0762
- Malfunctioning shift solenoid 'C'
- Electrical issues such as a short circuit or faulty wiring connection
- Low transmission fluid levels
- Dirty transmission fluid
- Internal transmission damage
Symptoms of P0762
- Harsh or delayed shifting
- Transmission slipping
- Decreased fuel efficiency
- Transmission getting stuck in a single gear
- Illumination of the check engine light
How to Fix P0762
- Conduct a diagnosis with a scan tool to confirm the P0762 code and identify the specific issue with the shift solenoid 'C'.
- Inspect the wiring harness and connections to ensure there are no electrical issues causing the shift solenoid to remain stuck on.
- Check the transmission fluid level and condition, topping up or replacing it if necessary.
- If the shift solenoid 'C' is found to be faulty, replace it with a new one following the manufacturer's guidelines.
- Clear the diagnostic trouble codes and test drive the vehicle to ensure that the issue has been resolved.
Cost to Fix P0762
The typical repair costs for addressing a shift solenoid 'C' stuck on issue can range from $200 to $500, including parts and labor. Solenoid C gets a bad rap, in that it almost never fails. This solenoid only supplies pressure to operate the reverse clutch & the direct clutch (3-4 clutch). If the solenoid is defective then neither reverse or 3rd & 4th gear will operate properly, but 1st & 2nd gear will operate fine . Fluid passages in the valve body or the side plate (located on the driver's side of the Mazda 3 Trans (Mazda P.N. FN4A-El) could be blocked & both can be accessed without dropping the trans. If the error code happens only in reverse or when shifting to 3rd gear, the problem is in the respective clutch or a clogged fluid path. The problem is almost invariably the respective clutch piston. I normally replace the respective clutch, which can be done without dropping the trans. Loosening trans bolts, mounts & motor mounts will allow enough room to replace either the direct or reverse clutch (located directly behind the side plate.. Given an accurate description of any Mazda trans problem, I can pin point the problem. Failure of metal parts is rare & a whole different problem. You may clear any error code by briefly removing the positive battery terminal.
