P0455 Ford Code - Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected Gross Leak

I got this code at the same time that I did see a leak in the gas tank at the entrance of the pipe from de filler. It turned out that the rubber ring between pipe and tank was cracked and that was the reason of the leak, replaced it and it looks ok so far. I did not realize that the P0455 was related to the leak.

I have a 2000 Ford Contour and it DOES NOT have the fuel pressure sensor at the tank.
It's on the fuel rail under the hood.
My car at present runs better with the fuel cap off.
Who ever did the fuel system in all these contours could not of done a worse job.
Nothing but problems!

The pressure sensor on the fuel rail measure fuel pressure from the fuel pump to the fuel injectors. The pressure sensor on the fuel tank measures the pressure created by the fuel vapors inside the fuel tank. Two separate pressure sensors.

The problem that is setting the code P0455 more than likely is not related to the engine running rough. If the engine light is not ON, but the code is stored it's possible that the problem was fixed. If you leave the gas cap loose, then start then engine, then come back and retight the gas cap; the control module will set the code but will not trigger the code.

You could start by checking if the gas cap is loose.

It's possible that the gas cap it's the problem. See the "Tech Notes" above, there is a link there to a service bulletin from the factory to help you diagnose that problem.

I have a year older then your van and had the same error I bought a new gas cap and it was fine. I just had the error come on again and the cap was loose so I would suggest fuel cap be the first thing you check.

my '99 Expedition ran out of fuel after being parked on an angle. I got it back on level ground and it started right back up....BUT NOW I HAVE THAT DAMNED CHECK ENGINE LIGHT!!!!!! THE MANUAL SAYS THIS IS NORMAL??????

It's not normal, but since it run out of gas you should start clearing the code. You could clear the code with a scanner of by disconnecting the car battery.

A tune-up wont fix the code. The problem is that you have a leak on the EVAP system. Common cause for that code is a missing or loose gas cap.

Unfortunately you probably have a very small leak that it's difficult to find, and the next step is to have a tech check for EVAP leaks. Some tech will use a smog machine to detect the leak.

The P0455 code is for the EVAP system leak, but that shouldn't cause the engine performance or cause the engine to sputter.

You should work on to fix the P0171 code.

I have a 97 explorer with a 5.0 awd. I have p445 fault code. I have changed the gas cap, replaced gas filler neck and I still have this code. could the lines from the filler have a leak? or could the purge valve be bad? If it is the purge valve, where is valve located and how do I test the valve?

Since you have already replaced the filler neck and gas cap, the next step is to check for leak with an leak detector or by performing a smoke test. Your local repair shop should be able to do that for you.

The P0455 (EVAP Small Leak) won't cause a no start situation, but the P0171 (Lean System, possible intake leaks) could cause a no start problem.

I have a 2005 E-150 chateau. ..it started fine this morning. .while coming home it stalled once... ...the check engine light came on once before..had it checked out. .small evaporation leak..they reset the gas cap and reset the sensor. ..today it came back on and has stalled 2 more times...able to restart the engine with foot on gas pedal...is this a major issue with it or will getting a new gas cap and light reset enough to fix?

The code P0455 it's probably not be related to the engine stalling, unless there is a large vacuum hose disconnected. The gas cap will definitely wont cause the stall problem. Before replacing any parts, start by checking then engine for loose or disconnected hoses.

I have a 2012 Edge, my mobile WiFi module showed a P0455 on my phone, and low and behold my check engine light came on about a week later. Your vehicle won't pass the emissions test if the engine light is ON, other than that there is no harm to the engine, just to the environment.

That would be great if in fact that this particular vehicle had a gas cap.

Yes, other than a loos cap, the gasket on the gas cap is the most common cause that can trigger the P0455 code.

I have a 1998 ford f 250. Had a code for egr valve. Changed that and now it says po455. So I changed the gas cap. The codes have been cleared. I took it to the emission place and it failed for no2x. What do you think it is? No other codes are coming up.

Unfortunately, there are many things that could cause your vehicle failed the NOx test :
1. Lean Fuel Mixture
2. Defective EGR System
3. Defective Catalytic Converter (CAT)
4. High Engine Mileage
5. Engine Overheating

Since you have already change the EGR valve, then the next step is to check for intake leaks or low fuel pressure, which will cause a "Lean Fuel Mixture".
The P0455 code may not be related to the high NOx.

I have a recurring P0455 code that has triggered many times on my 2009 Ford Focus. The shop has replaced a fuel tank pressure sensor and vent solenoid to no avail. I have replaced the gas cap (twice) and the evap purge valve. Any thoughts on what else could be triggering this code? The only thing I can find beyond other lines / hoses is an EGR valve.

Unfortunately, I haven't had that problem, but I checked a national database of repairs for the P0455 code 2009 Ford Focus, and here is the list of the most common repairs. I hope that helps.

Have you check with a smoke machine? If no visual leaks are found with the smog machine, my best guess is that there is a problem with the Evap Leak Detection Unit

I haven’t. I didn’t think to ask the shop if they used a smoke machine. I’m on the verge of having a completely replaced evaporative system. Thanks for the response!

Update: smoke test performed at the shop. They told me it’s the fuel cap. Which has been replaced by an aftermarket and then OEM part with no resolution. I performed a smoke test to see for myself. There appears to be smoke coming from a vent from the overflow tube right next to the fuel cap in the access. So I assume the fuel tank filler tube and overflow assembly need replaced. Are you able to verify if that is correct?

It's possible, just make sure you check the tubes connectors and Fuel Tank Pressure Sensor first.

Thank you for that information. Last year the fuel tank pressure sensor was replaced. So I’m assuming that it must be the filler tube assembly. They seemed confident it’s not the evap canister at the shop.

My 2013 Edge Limited, 2 wheel drive has been setting the P0455 code for months. ONLY, when the fuel gets below 1/2 tank. I fill it up. Reset the codes and drive until half low again, then repeat. Can anyone help me pinpoint exactly what might be the cause? I hate to just start replacing evap system parts willy-nilly…
