The check engine light then revealed a code P1145, so I moved the previously removed sensor from the left side to the right (passenger) side. I have read that the fault could possibly be a crankshaft position sensor. How many of those are there and where are they located. But it could also be a possible camshaft timing solenoid. There must be two or more of those, so where are these things located?
    The engine seems to run OK with these codes showing, so did Nissan just add a bunch of sensors to confuse the folks attempting to correct their own vehicle problems? Are there more than two camshaft position sensors? How many crankshaft position sensors are there?
    Thanks for any help on this problem. I don't want to purchase a bucket of sensors and just change anything that looks like it has been on the engine for the last 100,000 miles.

  • If the solenoid valve is malfunctioning, would it be as simple as testing the valve with the required voltage and hoping to hear a click when it activates, or no click if it does not activate? There are most likely a pair of the solenoid valves. Where are they located? I would think they are in close proximity of the sensors. Also, I believe there are a couple of sensors which are installed in the front covers of the valve timing area. Do they also come into the picture when receiving codes P1140 or P1145?
    I haven't noticed any difference in engine performance, but this vehicle is a "backujp" vehicle which isn't used on a daily basis or driven long distances very often.

    The camshaft Position Sensor are the #5 on the picture. Besides the solenoids, the camshaft Position Sensor are usually the problem.

  • Thanks for the info. The two camshaft position sensors have been replaced and yesterday I removed the crankshaft sensor and verified correct resistance across the terminals. After replacement, I started the vehicle several times after clearing the code and the check engine light stayed off. Perhaps I didn't leave the engine shut down long enough because about an hour later when I restarted it, the light came back on. So next I will check the solenoids. Are they indicated in the picture? I am using a downloaded Nissan shop manual and find searching for particular subjects can be a task.

  • Somehow missed this reply and since reading it and viewing the picture I was able to locate the solenoid valves. Bank one valve had an open coil so it was replaced. Since starting the vehicle a few times the code returned, again indicating a sensor problem on bank 1. My next step will be to check for current flow from the computer to the solenoid valves. If running the engine, locating the wire from terminal 13 and 15 on the ECU, is it advisable to use a pointed volt meter probe to penetrate the insulation on the correct wire and read the voltage. If that is the thing to do, is there a necessary engine RPM required to read the voltage? My manual diagram indicates pins 13 and 15 are the correct pins to activate the solenoid valves. Wire colors are also shown on one or more of the diagrams in the manual, so are these diagrams to be trusted for correct colors/stripes?
    If all this is not advisable for checking the voltage, do you know the pin diameters on the ECU, so a correct sized probe can be used to check continuity from those terminals in the wiring harness when disconnected?

I just replaced the Intake Valve Timing Control Solenoid Valve then reset the Engine light, it turned off while it test drive about 40 miles, it still stayed off. I turned engine off let it sit for a while, and then re started the car, and the check engine light turned back and stayed on.
