  • Would standard 225/75R16 tires on the front and 225/65R16 tires on the back of a Promaster 1500, used to level it out with a smaller diameter wheel, cause the "Implausible Vehicle Speed Signal " as the rears are going to rotate faster. ? Is there a simple fix?

    • Unfortunately, there really isn’t a good electronic shortcut for this. The ABS module compares the actual speed of each wheel, so changing the programmed tire size won’t correct a front-to-rear diameter difference. One tire-size setting applies to the whole vehicle; it can’t tell the computer to expect the rear wheels to rotate faster than the fronts.

      The only reliable fix is to use tires with nearly the same overall diameter on all four wheels. Otherwise you may continue getting U1412 along with ABS, traction-control, or stability-control warnings. Resistors, sensor spacers, or attempts to alter the wheel-speed signals are not recommended because they can interfere with the ABS and stability systems.

      A closer-size rear tire may still level the van slightly without creating such a large speed difference, but the rolling diameters should remain very close—generally within about 1% front to rear.
