Customer may comment that the vehicle will not crank or start/will not shift after the vehicle has been jump-started due to the battery run down or after installation of aftermarket equipment.
Technicians may find no communication with the TCM and or DTC U0101 stored in other modules.
A few TCM's have been returned from the field for analysis because of the above symptoms. The field returned TCM's were analyzed and found to have two battery ground nodes inside the TCM damaged by excessive electrical current passing through the heatsink of the TCM. The nodes affected described as wire bonds are wire tied to pins 9 and 69[battery ground pins] of the TCM.
The TCM is manufactured so that the heatsink of the TCM is isolated from all vehicle electrical systems including vehicle chassis ground. Do not ground welders, battery chargers, electrostatic painters or any other equipment to the heatsink. Disconnect the 80-way connector from the TCM when electrically welding etc. to the vehicle.
To avoid damaging the TCM in this manner, NEVER ALLOW the following:
1. Battery positive wires to touch the heatsink of the TCM [e.g.When jump-starting vehicle]
2. Positive battery power chassis harness wire to pin 10 and pin 70 of the TCM to be wired without fuse protection of 10-15 amps.
3. Physical contact between heatsink and vehicle chassis or other ground circuit points.
4. Electrical grounding of devices such as arc welders, battery chargers, and electrostatic painters, or jumper cables to the TCM heatsink.
Recommendations/Instructions:
Take the following steps to check for damaged ground wire bonds if the symptoms for concern are No Engine Crank and/or No Communications with Tech II.
1. Switch ignition key off.
2. Disconnect the TCM electrical connector and remove TCM from the vehicle.
3. Test for continuity between pins 9 and 69 at the TCM. If continuity exists between pins 9 and 69, then refer to steps in eSI for O Engine Crank and/or No Communications
If the circuit between pins 9 and 69 have no continuity, then the TCM has been damaged/shorted from some sort of external source shorting to the heatsink of the TCM.
1. Inspect for the source that shorted the TCM heatsink.
2. Eliminate or repair the source or condition that caused the damage.
3. Replace damaged TCM after the condition that caused the TCM damage has been corrected.
NOTE: Visual surface pits and carbon deposits are typically found on the TCM heatsink when high energy arcs are generated by shorts between the heatsink and battery power.

2011 Impala 3.5.
The usual GM traction control/abs/stabilitrak/brake assist lights.
Hesitation when turning left from a stop, traction control cuts in and the lamp flashes. Periodically, I will get the "Service Stabilitrak, Service Brake Assist, Service Traction Control" all at the same time, and they go away after a minute or two.
I've had it scanned while driving, and it produces the 3 codes you see in this picture.
Any idea how to solve it? Or should I just run with the traction control off all the time like I have been for a year?

Unfortunately lost communication codes are very difficult to diagnose, could be the PCM, TCM or the harness. Sometimes the problem is the PCM or TCM connector, with time the connector gets loose or poor connection develops in the pin. I suggest disconnect and reconnect PCM, clear the codes and drive it.

2013 Chevy Impala LT 3.6
U0101 code , service stabiltrak light came on. PRNDL on dash had no circle around letter indicating what gear it was in. Drove the car to the mechanic shop and they replaced and programmed a new TCM. A few days of driving fine and on day 3 , all the symptoms came back. Any idea on what else it could be ? -
The U0101 code means that at some point the PCM lost the communication with the TCM. If you have already replaced and reprogrammed the TCM and the code came back, then the next step is to check the wires from the TCM to the PCM. Make sure you check the TCM connectors pins, there are several bulletins for other Chevy vehicles with the same problem, and the factory recommends checking the TCM connectors for loose pins.

2013 Chevy Sonic 1.8 liter, codes u0101, po597, po598, po171, I want to fix The transmission code before I get to the other ones. The car shift into gear reverse neutral and drive very violently. Found the problem! TCM wire had a short in it. Bypass the wire and shifts perfect. Hesitated at first shifting for a few miles but I think it relearned itself. Thank you sir.

So a month ago I brought a 2013 Chevy Impala LTZ the dealer had just put a new engine in it. So it was driving good for two weeks I was going on a trip wanted to look at the oil and transmission oil and I seen a little screwdriver so I pulled it out when I went to start the car it didn’t show the light indicating what gear it was in around the P,R,N,D and it shift hard and had no power and it was saying that it lost connection to the transmission control modul. So I guess the screwdriver was there pushing up the wiring plug to give it better contact. So do I have to change the wiring Hardness Plug that plugs in to the tcm?

So I had to replace the Trassmistion control module that cost me $600 plus to program it another $150 and a friend that did the job only charged me $150

At first I thought since I pulled the screwdriver out from the wiring plug that connected to the tcm that it was the problem so before I spent $750 total on replacing the tcm and programming it I had my friend mechanic look at the wire if connector and it wasn’t it so I think it’s going to be your wiring connector that plugs in to your tcm that’s probably what it was and not your tcm

I had a problem with 2007 2500HD diesel where i had to replace the power steering pump and when I hooked up the second battery I guess something in the alternator shorted and burned the alternator output wire in two. It also shorted the starter solenoid coil. After replacing alternator and starter, hooked up batteries and started the truck, when I put it into gear it shook violently and would not move. Put back in park . Scanner said dtc U0101 tcm not communicating. Dash said ABS failure and fix brakes immediately. Got on internet and tried to figure the problem. Got to thinking probably should start checking fuses and found TCMB 10 amp fuse blown. Replaced fuse. Everything fine now. Sometimes it is something very simple.
