I have a 2006 GMC Canyon, 3.5L, 128,000 miles. I have replaced the throttle body, the Accelerator pedal position sensor, and cleaned the MAF. It still throws codes P2176, P2101, and P1516. Do I need to have the idle relearn programmed, or is it something I can do, or is it necessary? The only other thing I can think of maybe the PCM? Battery is always between 12.35 to 14 volts. I am thinking it is something electrical because I can clear codes with an OBDII, but they come back if I turn ignition to on, even without cranking over. Also, these codes are causing "REDUCED POWER".

Me too, I have an 06, 3.5, just changed the MAF and the throttle body, now I get the P2176... How long does it take to relearn? Do I need to have it reprogrammed???

I can't imagine that we would have to see a dealer for reprogramming because a part was changed such as the throttle body, but maybe.....ugh

Could be a fluke, but I lifted this (GM Computer Relearn Procedure) from another site. It worked so far. I have to do a drive cycle but so far it's good. I performed this procedure and then cleared codes. It started without "reduced power". Before I did this procedure, the truck would throw codes with ignition ON even if I hadn't started the engine yet. So I could never get out of "reduced power". Also, after I got it to start normally, I let it idle for 3 min, turned it off for 1 min. I did this 3 times. Every time the engine fired up great!
GM Computer Relearn Procedure (including Crankshaft relearn)
1. First, insert the ignition key and turn the ignition switch to the “On” position (Do not start the engine). Leave the switch on for 11 minutes. The security light may flash or be on steady during this 11 minute period. Make sure the light is no longer on or flashing before proceeding to #2 .
2. Turn the ignition switch off for 30 seconds.
3. Turn the ignition switch to the “On” position (as in step #1) for 11 minutes again.
4. Turn the ignition switch off for another 30 seconds.
5. Turn the ignition switch to the “On” position for 11 minutes a third time.
6. Turn the ignition switch off for 30 seconds one final time.
7. Turn the ignition switch to the “On” position one final time and wait 30 seconds.
8. Attempt to start the engine. If the engine starts and runs normally, the relearn is complete. If the engine does not start, check for trouble codes and address them before attempting the relearn procedure again. -

I found a bulletin (See Tech Notes above). The bulletin suggest that sometimes the problem is a faulty PCV valve.

Update: IT WAS A FLUKE!!! The procedure above had nothing to do with my truck running well. It was an intermittent problem. The only reason the truck fired up was because I got lucky. I was never able to test the voltages at the connector because I could not find a reliable pin-out diagram. However, I did find one this morning. I tested the reference voltage at the pins. There are 2. The first pic is of the two pins that should have 12 volts (at least that is what I got), one is circled in blue and one is circled in red. The pin in blue was a solid 12V. The pin circled in red is where my problem was. When probed, I intermittently got 12V every time I wiggled the connector. So I back probed and had the same result. This told me that the connector is good and the problem is somewhere in the wire before it gets to the connector. I pulled back the wire loom and saw a little discoloration in the brown wire, about an inch from the connector. Upon inspection, this wire was broken somehow. I stripped both ends and made a connection via jumper. The truck fired up great! I even tried to recreate the previous symptoms by disconnecting the jumper and success! The truck threw the same codes as before and went into reduced power. So I soldered the wire back together. I took the truck on a 7 mile trip, including the freeway, and everything is working awesome! I also included a pic of the back side of another connector of the same type in order to see the brown wire and yellow wire which are your reference voltage. Hope this helps.

Well sir, thanks for the info.. I have tested mine and found 0 volts from either of the two wires. All the others are reading nominal to 5 volts, but the two you said should have 12 volts, are both dead. I tested 3 ways, key on, key off, and engine running... i get nothing from those 2 ever. I back probed, and got nothing also... So, where do these 2 wires go??? What could cause both to be dead? I already replaced the throttle body, so I am already in $225 for that... So, now where do I look?

So those two wires should have 12V with the ignition on, and engine not running. If not it can be the fuse and/or possibly the relay. By the way. I'm not sure if those wires are actually the reference voltage, but either way they should be around 12V depending on the condition of your battery. I have included a picture of the fuse and relay in question. Since both wires are dead, my next step would be to check the fuse. You said you have a 2006 3.5, is it a Colorado/canyon? Because the picture is of a Colorado/canyon fuse block.

Yeah the PCM could also be the problem. There is a way to test the wiring harness from the PCM out to the relay. If you need it, I'm sure I could dig it up. However, I think you need a factory GM scan tool to test the actual PCM. If you find that the PCM is bad, I found a site that you can buy a preprogrammed PCM for about $130.00. That's how much it would cost for my Canyon. You give them your VIN and they program the PCM for you. When you get it, it is just plug and play.

Well, tried a new relay, and fuse, no luck here... Guess I am looking at a PCM... Cant find any other reason both leads are completely dead

I would like to test the harness if possible, but I think its gonna be the pcm... both wires doing what they did, sounds like a control to me...If you can hook me up with the site to get the pcm that would be great!!! Thanks

Update for ya..... I ended up taking my truck to the dealer to get the new computer programmed, and after they did that, we discovered a large mouse nest, under my wiper reservoir. Since I have only had the truck a few months, I figure this was there when I bought it... Anyhow, they found several wires chewed through, and grounding out. This ended up ruining my PCM, and then the BCM also had issues... Well, all those shorts, ended up needing the 2-computers, and the throttle body I replaced for good measure.. All in all, the whole thing cost just under $1000 for all parts, wiring repair and programming. Now, the truck is running fantastic. So thanks again for all the assistance, Andrew, you are a great guy!!!

I'm just curious though did you buy the new PCM from the website that I posted? I'm curious because they said that they will send a pre-program unit. I'm just wondering if they did that or not.
