The minivan is a 01-dodge grand caravan sport (Canadian model) I acquired the van from a friend who said the tranny was out. The solution was a tranny from a wrecked van that had 160000 miles on it. The tranny works great until the torque converter tries to lock into overdrive. The van goes into failsafe mode and shifts to second gear. I first thought to replace the shift solenoid which I did. But the gasket leaked so I again replaced the gasket and tried it. Victory! The van worked fine! I let the van sit for a few months. I got the title and tagged it. Took it on its maiden voyage and alas! The van shifted into failsafe mode and didn’t shift from second gear. So, I checked wiring switched out the control computer and replaced the shift solenoid with a brand new one replaced the input output shaft sensors and still no luck. I had the chance to run a expensive snap on diagnostic tool and found the code po1776 the low reverse valve is stuck in the open position. I called the local tranny shops for their opinion and got “Tranny overhaul”, “reseal the shift solenoid”, “rebuild the valve body”, and “your torque converter is bad. So, I went ahead and sealed the shift solenoid and now I know it is sealed right still no change. This is my sisters van I am at a loss. If it is the valve body can I do that myself without removing the tranny.
