I replaced the coolant temperature sensor today. It really needed replacing, considering it's the original (car has 480,000 miles). But it didn't fix the overheating, so my next thought is the head temperature sensor. Hopefully easier to get at.

Yes, that’s the one I replaced. Driving home (10 minutes) it appeared fine but started to overheat as I got home (we live up top of a hill). I had the AC on to replicate the problem, and it did. The AC blew hot, btw, never cooled.
So.. it’s clearly something else.

Have you replaced the thermostat? bad thermostat could trigger the code and cause the overheat problem.

It appears to be the fan relay. The fan never comes on. At least we’ll start there and move up the dollar chain.

You have to remove the lower intake manifold to access the sensor (See image below). Before you replace the sensor, make sure there are no coolant leaks and that the radiator fans are working properly. Also, I recommend changing the thermostat before changing the sensor.

My 06 ls v8 upper radiator hose burst, got an audible warning to check engine temp, saw gauge pegged, pulled over and shut engine off. After replacing upper and lower hoses and replacing coolant and bleeding system and then test drive I then noticed MIL on. Checking w/OBDII reader showed P1299. I didn't notice the MIL till after test drive. I cleared MIL and will see if it returns.

Looking for Cylinder Head Temperature (CHT) Sensor location? Along with any input.
Coolant is fine, engine is not over heating but a FAN keeps kicking on. Check engine light turned on while driving and vehicle stalled. I did a Reset code with OBD2 scanner and was able to get vehicle home. Initially started with heater blowing cold air, not getting hot. I will also be replacing the thermostat.

CHT sensor is located in left cylinder below intake manifold. The P1299 code Indicates that an engine overheat condition was detected by the CHT sensor. Before replacing the sensor, check if your vehicle is overheating. If is "NOT" overheating, then the problem is the sensor. If the engine is overheating, then the problems is something else, like the thermostat or water pump.
