  • Any other codes besides the P1283? The battery light came ON because the engine almost stall, so don't worry about that light. The P1283 code is for the Air/Fuel Ratio Sensor, but that sensor shouldn't cause the engine to hesitate or stall. The problem is more than likely something else, but if is not consistence, you may have problem trying to figure out he cause. I recommend to just visual check the engine for loose hoses, make sure the battery terminal are clean and tight and then clear the code for now.

    B) Break problems change the pad or check of the are good, the break fluid level
    C) VDC sensor at the Master Cylinder by side the breaking pump, there's a sensor down the break fluid that maybe need to clean with contact cleaner the connection :)

    The P1283 code is for Air Fuel Ratio (A/F) Sensor 1 Bank 2. This sensor can trigger the Engine Light, but not all the one warning light you have. There must be some other problem that is triggering all the other warning lights.

  • Did you replaced the front or rear Oxygen sensors? The codes are for both front Oxygen sensors. Since you got the codes after the catalytic converters, first check the sensor connection, otherwise you may have to replace the sensor

  • No,the mechanic changed a sensor yesterday (pasenger side ) because the tester show up p1283 ,now today the engine light come back ,i come back to the mechanic and he put it the scanner again and show the same code p1283 and now he say that i have to change the sensor that goes on the driver side

  • Try do the clearing first. There is even a factory service bulletin for that problem. You can also disconnect the car battery for about 45 minutes.

  • No, you shouldn't have to replace the other sensor. In my opinion is not a good diagnosis, one bad sensor wont affect the other one.

  • I had the p0420 code, replaced the cat on the passenger side, code went away, now I have the p1283 code. While I was under there, the other components (driver side cat and both side rear cats) looked fairly rusted. Was thinking this could be an exhaust leak. Already replaced the intake plenum, and the front driver side a/f sensor. Replaced both sensors on the passenger side when replacing that converter. Replaced with a carb compliant model. Was hoping I would have less hesitation if I fix the potential exhaust leak or plugged converter situation. Maybe the back pressure can cause other issues I have felt like a slipping after throttling and transmission shifting errors at times, was concerned that my a.c.compressor may also need a new pulley which could have similar effects. When the vehicle is under load, it makes a scratchy squeal from the drivers side of the engine.(a.c. compressor idler pulley area, idler pulley replaced) was also thinking maybe the internal water pump, maybe the blades wore down?

  • I have a 2005 Nissan Pathfinder. I will try to clean the sensor with mass airflow cleaner and replace the air filter, but I feel as though there may be an exhaust leak causing the unmetered air to enter the system. Just not exactly sure why the computer would add more fuel if this issue happens after the combustion chamber. I guess it doesn't understand where the leak is, but you would think if it made the car run rough and hesitate, the computer would recalculate and determine that the leak past the engine shouldn't cause the vehicle to add more fuel. I will try to get all the issues taken care of. Probably will just replace all the rusted catalytic components and use the appropriate gaskets and o ring seals to seal everything properly. Then maybe wrap the joints in muffler tape and spray it all with a rust preventative high temp paint.

    No air can enter into the engine through the exhaust system.
    If there is an exhaust leak before the front oxygen sensors (Air/Fuel (A/F) Ratio Sensors), the sensors will calculate a lean ratio, thus the ECM will add more fuel to the combustion.
    So, if the exhaust leaks is before the A/F Sensors, then the ECM will set the code, otherwise the exhaust leak has nothing to do with the code.

  • Thank you. So I guess my best course of action would be to clean the maf sensor and look for brittle hoses or other sources of air, maybe install new exhaust coverter and header gaskets. Or replace the cats all together. Oem would be like 1700 for three of the 4 components. Walker carb compliant cats are 700 for the 3. I should try that technique with the soapy water and pressured air into the tail pipe to see if I can find it closer to the a/f sensor. If the air got in behind the combustion, but before the a/f sensor on the 3 way catalyst, could this cause similar symptoms as air intake leaks after the maf?
