Have a 2004 Beetle 2.0 light came on stopped shifting stayed in high gear. changed filter and fluid. Reset light shifted fine then ligjt came on again and it stopped shifting. If I reset it it works for a while and as soon as light comes on trans stops shifting again

I have this code on my 2001 VW Jetta VR6. 135K miles. Don't know the cars history as I bought it used. I drove it for 80 miles on the highway, exited the highway and when I turned a corner and accelerated out of the turn.. the RPM's revved up. It wouldn't go more than 20 mph. I pulled over. Turned the car off. Turned it on and then it went for a bit and then the same thing happened. I was far away from home but by letting it sit and cool I was able to drive home with the incident happening a few more times. Never happened on the highway. Now I am trying to figure out what to do next.
