Note that when this occurs most cars will go into a "limp" mode. This is to protect the transmission. To the driver it feels like you are taking off from second gear. Each time you turn the car on/off limp mode is reset. In my case, only after turning the car on, it would shift out of 1st with a thud at around 30mph's. From that point on it would not "thud" but the car would lose 70% of it's power. Turning the car on/off repeats this cycle.
