P0478 Code - Exhaust Pressure Control Valve High

Quick Answer

The P0478 code indicates a problem with the Exhaust Pressure Control Valve (EPCV) being too high. Common causes include Faulty Exhaust Pressure Control Valve, Clogged or restricted exhaust system, Wiring or electrical issues. Severity is Moderate - service should be scheduled soon. The vehicle may still be drivable for short trips if it runs normally, but avoid hard driving and repair it soon.

Code P0478 Description

The P0478 code indicates a problem with the Exhaust Pressure Control Valve (EPCV) being too high. The EPCV is responsible for regulating the exhaust pressure in the vehicle's exhaust system. When the EPCV is stuck in the high position, it can lead to issues with the vehicle's performance, emissions, and overall efficiency. This can result in decreased fuel economy, reduced engine power, and potential damage to other components in the exhaust system.

Common Causes of P0478

  1. Faulty Exhaust Pressure Control Valve
  2. Clogged or restricted exhaust system
  3. Wiring or electrical issues
  4. ECM software malfunction
  5. Exhaust gas temperature sensor failure

Symptoms of P0478

  1. Check engine light illuminated on the dashboard
  2. Reduced engine power
  3. Decreased fuel economy
  4. Increased exhaust noise
  5. Rough idling or stalling

How to Fix P0478

  1. Diagnose the issue by using a scan tool to retrieve the fault code and inspecting the EPCV and related components.
  2. Check for any obstructions or damage in the exhaust system that may be causing the high pressure.
  3. Test the EPCV for proper operation and replace it if necessary.
  4. Inspect the wiring and connectors associated with the EPCV for any damage or corrosion.
  5. Clear the fault code, reset the ECM, and test drive the vehicle to ensure the issue has been resolved.

Cost to Fix P0478

The cost of repairing a P0478 code can vary depending on the specific cause of the issue and the make and model of the vehicle. On average, the repair costs for this issue can range from $200 to $500, including parts and labor. It's important to note that diagnostic time and labor rates at auto repair shops can vary, so it's advisable to check with local shops for a more accurate estimate.

Tech Notes for P0478

Check the Exhaust Back Pressure Valve (EBPV) butterfly valve is opening and closing freely and not sticking. If it seems to move freely you can then check the connector and circuit for the EBPV solenoid.

When is the Code Detected?

Problems with either the Exhaust Back Pressure (EBP) Device or the tube between the exhaust manifold and the EBP sensor can be detected during the exhaust back pressure step test, in which the Engine Control Module (ECM) commands and then measures a specific preprogrammed pressure and then measures time for pressure decay during the engine running test.

If the ECM detects an Exhaust Back Pressure (EBP), Engine Oil Temperature (EOT) or Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor fault it will disable the exhaust back pressure regulator.
