Code P0463 Cadillac Description

The P0463 trouble code for Cadillac vehicles indicates that the fuel level sensor circuit is registering a higher voltage than normal. This sensor is responsible for sending information to the vehicle's fuel gauge, which displays the current fuel level to the driver. When the sensor detects a high voltage, it may inaccurately report that the fuel tank is full or near-full, even when it is not. This can lead to misleading fuel level readings and potentially cause the vehicle to run out of fuel unexpectedly.

Discuss the causes and fixes for P0463 Cadillac OBDII Code

  • This is a very common problem on late-1990's early 2000's Cadillacs. I did a lot of research and the problem is usually sulfur fouling of the fuel level sensing element in the fuel tank. Turns out that a lot of gasoline around that time frame in the Northeast had too much sulfur content and it fouled many things including these elements. It causes the fuel level gauge to appear full all of the time. The only solutions are:

    • to fill the car when driven an arbitrary distance (250 - 300 miles seems popular)
    • to fill the car when driven an arbitrary number of days (once a week works for me)
    • to replace the fuel pump / filter / level sensor assembly ($500 to $1,000 estimated)
    • to use the digital "fuel used" readout (if one has the digital dash option like my '04 DeVille)
    • add a bottle of Chevron 65740 Techron Concentrate Plus Fuel System Cleaner each fillup
(Some chemical in Techron cleans the fuel level sensor element and allows it to work but it is
very expensive -- $15 a bottle -- and takes a while to work. I had to quit after four bottles due
to budgetary issues but by now the top quarter of the fuel level gauge actually works.)
