Code P0344 Jeep Description

The P0344 diagnostic trouble code (DTC) for Jeep vehicles specifically refers to a fault with the camshaft position sensor for Bank 1 Sensor 1. This sensor is crucial for the engine control module (ECM) to accurately determine the position of the camshaft in relation to the crankshaft, allowing for precise timing of the engine's fuel injection and ignition system. An intermittent issue with this sensor can lead to erratic engine performance, misfires, and potentially even stalling.

Common Causes of P0344 Jeep

  1. Faulty camshaft position sensor
  2. Wiring issues or poor connections
  3. Timing belt/chain problems
  4. ECM software update needed
  5. Mechanical issues with the camshaft or crankshaft

Symptoms of P0344 Jeep

  1. Check Engine Light illuminated
  2. Engine misfires or runs rough
  3. Decreased fuel efficiency
  4. Engine stalling or difficulty starting
  5. Loss of power during acceleration

How to Fix P0344 Jeep

  1. Diagnose the issue by connecting a diagnostic scanner to retrieve the specific code and perform a visual inspection of the camshaft position sensor and its wiring.
  2. Test the camshaft position sensor using a multimeter to check for proper voltage and signal output.
  3. Replace the camshaft position sensor if it is found to be faulty, ensuring proper installation and connection.
  4. Check and repair any damaged or corroded wiring related to the sensor.
  5. Clear the DTC and perform a test drive to ensure the issue has been resolved.

Cost to Fix P0344 Jeep

The cost of repairing a P0344 code on a Jeep can vary depending on the specific model and year of the vehicle, as well as the labor rates in your area. Typically, the cost of a new camshaft position sensor can range from $50 to $150, while the labor time for replacement may be around 1-2 hours. Therefore, the total repair cost could be anywhere from $150 to $300, including parts and labor. It's important to note that these are rough estimates, and actual costs may differ based on individual circumstances and the location of the repair shop.

Tech Notes for P0344 Jeep

In the event of a failure in either the Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor or Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor, the engine can still start. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) is capable of determining the engine position and initiating startup based on one of these two inputs. However, there may be a small delay in starting as the PCM needs time to establish synchronization. If either the CKP or CMP Sensor signals are absent during engine cranking, a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) is recorded, and the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) lights up.

Discuss the causes and fixes for P0344 Jeep OBDII Code

  • 2006 Jeep Liberty 3.7 P0344 code happens when starting the car and while driving the car. Replaced cam and crank position sensors already.

  • Most of the times the Crankshaft Position Sensor or Crankshaft Position Sensor will take care of the problem. You next step is reprogramming the Powertrain Control Module (PCM), there are some incidents reported, were the problem was the PCM program and not the sensors. Just make sure the sensors connectors are firmly connected.

  • Just paid the dealer $179 to diagnose and reprogram the PCM. Picked it up and on the way home it sputters and loses power on acceleration after two signals. Eventually smooths out. When you run it often it does it less times.
Any ideas without having a dealer through parts at it?

  • I'm sorry you are still having problems. My only suggestions is to double check the Camshaft Position Sensor connection, and if possible replaced the sensor again. Make sure you use a factory sensor.
