Why!! It's great that the so called experts give a description of faults caused by the cam position sensor itself. But no where does it address the reason for having a cam shaft position sensor in the first place which is basically to make sure the #1 TDC is not out of alignment with the camshaft. In my case the timing belt jumped a few teeth and gave a p034 fault code. In my case the difference of one tooth out on the timing belt was a difference of going from 38 mpg to 32 mpg.

Will I read power from the engine control with the cam position sensor unplugged? What voltage should it be. I Ohmed the wire fron the control to the sensor and it checks good.

Seeing as though STM didn't reply I would really like to know the answer to his question. Mine is a 2007 Yaris 1kr-fe. Got the P0340 but sensor has been replaced and I am measuring 5v between the two outer pins and I am also getting 5v on the Centre signal pin. Please let me know if this is right. Thanks

I also test the cable from the sensor side to the ecm side for continuity to make sure it was the right cable and I get positive 5v on sensor side and negative 7v on ecm side

The best way to check the the Camshaft Position Sensor function is with an oscilloscope. You wont be able to get a good read with a volt meter, but I have attached an image of the test you can do with an ohm meter.

i was lead to believe the camshaft position sensor was in the distributor so i replace it still getting code so now i have the crankshaft position sensor and i hope this work and also a new alternator cause now thats went out.. 96 camry

1999 rav4 timing belt snapped while stopped at a red light, I replaced the belt and engine wouldn’t start at first, had to replace both camshaft and crankshaft sensors. They were both covered in oil and debris and static/magnetic components were dented/damaged. After everything I recharged the battery and finally got it to start up properly but not it’s running really rough and it can’t be the oil cause I just did and oil change a week or 2 before the timing belt snapped (less than 500 miles). I’m 98% positive I got the timing belt on properly but not sure if it’s too tight or not tight enough. Also I was checking the spark plugs while the engine was running by pulling the wire off of each plug individually and there was only one plug that didn’t make a difference in the way the engine ran (the third plug from left to right, 4 in total). My question, is it possible that the spark plug is not good and could be causing the ECU to keep showing that trouble code? There’s no other codes showing but p0340 while driving braking or idiling

I never seen a bad spark plug triggering the P0340 code. Either the timing is off or the new sensor you got is bad. Did you change the timing belt tensioner with the timing belt?
