My 03 Altima was slow to start periodically for a few months. Then came the slapping, loss of power, jolting sensation which occurs periodically while idle and driving. Initially it gave codes 0335 and 0725 (Cam and Crank Sensor) so I replaced them with the Nissan recommended part for $230. Immediately after replacing sensors, the car continued to hesitate, knock, etc...and it then produced code 0304 (cyl. 4 misfire). I've read a lot on these issues and it seems to be an engine flaw. The scope of the associated Nissan recall is suspicious as well. I've read reviews of fixes such as plugs, coils, connectors, sensors, cat. converters, intakes, compression tests, leaks, etc....all of which was performed on the same car with the same exact symptoms as mine - all of which only temporarily fixed the issue. I don't know what to try first after replacing sensors - I don't have the money to put band-aides on a fatal engine flaw Nissan won't take accountability for.
I wish I could put a Nissan master-tech under "truth potion" and ask him his thoughts about all the issues with the 2.5L engine around crank/ cam sensors...and strange periodic misfires. -
Do you have the results from the compression test? sounds like you could have a blown head gasket, which is somewhat common for the 03 Altima with 2.5L engine.

My 03 3.5 gave me 301 code cylinder 1 misfire. Im a mechanic by trade for about 15 years and let me tell you, this car put some grays on my head.. Took out plugs all were worn to nothing, literally nothing. Changed them witg some nice platinum ngk and problem still occured. Ok then checked compression it was good, leak test also good. Checked intake/vacuum leaks good... Did harness from ecu to coils and they all checked out. Finally swapped front 3 coils to rear which i know all front were working and rear to front with no difference in misfire. Ok now my final test to check coils individually. The funny thing is they all fired. I finally said to myself to change out the coils in which i had ordered 6 due to the fact that the coils had high milage on it. I only changed the number one cylinder with new coil cleared the light and presto. Problem solved. Im my investigation it turned out to be bad coil. What i think was happening was the coils are bad and shorting out until finally it stopped sparking... I checked number one coil again and it wasnt sparking before i replaced it. Hope this helps
