hi I had a question my mazdaspeed3 is tune with a 50/50 mix of e85 and 93 oct I was wondering if this could throw a code for the lean bank 1 code I notice for 250miles the code never came on once I went and filled up from a quarter of a tank the code came back

Yes, it's very likely that the mix is causing the lean code.

I got this code yesterday and after clearing it by removing the battery, I'm finding some stuttering on acceleration but the check engine light has not come back on. Does this still sound like a lack of air flow issue?

Yes, it sounds like a air flow problem, possible MAF. Faulty Air/Fuel Mixture sensor usually wont cause an engine performance problem.

Lean mixture means that the engine is not getting enough fuel. You possible have clogged fuel injectors. Start by performing and injector flush.

so I just bought a Mazda protégé 5 . 2003 (yesterday 4-5-2015 ) when I bought the car everything seemed fine but maybe after 40 miles from the dealership to my house the engine light came on. took it to auto zone and it said po701.

Could you please confirm what code you got. Is it P0171 or P0701? The P0701 doesn't exist for your model year. If the problem is the P0171 code, then there are several things that could trigger that code. You can read above for the list of "Possible Causes"

I have a 2003 mazdaspeed protege and it has that lean code and i have put a fuel injection cleaner and i change the ignitions and the spark plugs and it still looses power, what could it be?

Check for intake leaks or the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor, those are the more likely causes for lean systems codes.

What model and year is your Mazda? If there are no intake (which is probably the most common problem) or exhaust leaks, then you should consider replacing the MAF sensor.

Getting this code it was with a P0420 the PO420 has now stopped popping up but after about 25 miles the P0171 pops up and I have heard a hissing for around 5 second after I turn off the engine its a 1.8 2003

The hissing noise and the P0171, means that there most be a air intake leak in the engine.

I have a 2003 mazda b2300 with P0171 code for a while but over thanksgiving weekend it died on me several times while at a stop light, could it be the MAF or O2 sensor? I'm pretty sure there are no leaks

The O2 sensor wont make the engine die, more than likely you have a problem with the MAF.

I went to Mazda and they said I needed to replace my MAF sensor on my 2010 Mazda 3. The issue is I have replaced it twice already through Firestone. How can it fail three times already within a year?

I paid the $105 diagnostic price to get this evaluation, so I imagine they tested all of the other items. Should I just buy a MAF sensor myself and install it or is there likely another issue that Mazda is missing?

I am getting code P0171.

Did you use new original factory MAF? Do you have aftermarket air filter (e.g. K&N filter)? aftermarket filter could cause a premature damage of the MAF.

Also, there are other things that could cause that problem. The P0171 code means that the mixture is too lean, but doesn't necessary means that the MAF is the problem.

At this point, I suggest replacing the air filter, make sure there are no intake leaks and if you still get the code, just replace the MAF by your self.

Mazda did the diagnostic and determined the sensor to be the issue, because nothing else was wrong.

I do not know when or if the air filter has ever been changed. I never requested that it be changed, but I am unsure if that is automatically done for one reason or another.

Are air filters simple to replace? Are they readily available from Advance Auto Parts or do I need to order something like that? Same questions for the MAF sensor if the filter is not the issue.

The check engine light comes on intermittently. It is not on every time I start the car. It will sometimes come on while I am driving, other times stay off for a couple days before showing itself again. I do not know if that matters in figuring out the issue.

Some mechanics (even the dealer) tend to overlook small or simple items. Replacing the filter its very simple and inexpensive (should be done every 12 months). You can get a new air filter for around $10-$15 at any auto parts (e.g. AutoZone). Replacing the MAF it's actually simple as well, just remove the 2 screws (see attached image) pull out the MAF and install the new one.

Air filter looked clean. I took it out, vacuumed it as best I could, and reinstalled it. Ill see if the light comes back on. Since Firestone replaced the MAF sensor twice for me, I may try some other items on the list before replacing it again. The check engine light isn't on right now so Ill wait and see if it comes back before tackling more items.

I had p0171 earlier this year I did all the maf things I could do my self so I know it wasn't that I changed my pcv valve it went away. a couple months later i got a new code for somethin else here we go again...try pcv valve if your a DIY save yourself some money easy job....I have a 2008 Mazda 3 2.0

I've owned a 2003 protege 3 mazdaspeed for 9 years and its been a great car. last month my check engine light came on with code p0171 saying my system was too lean so i brought it to mazda to diagnose just to be safe even though it was running perfectly fine.

They told me it was a fuel pressure valve solenoid so i spent $400 to replace it and was driving home and my check engine light came back on saying same code p0171 so i brought it back and they say oops let's try diagnosing it again and then say its my wastegate actuator and it will be a week to order the part so come pick up my car in the meantime cuz its perfectly safe to drive.

One block after leaving mazda i notice the car wont accelerate even though im pressing on the gas pedal then when i come to a stop it shudders and dies. my car has never done anything like this so i turned around and it died 10 more times on the way back to mazda. every time it died my check engine, battery, and oil lights all came on. i thought oil light? thats weird i just got my oil changed 1,000km ago so i pull into their lot and immediately check my oil. there was no oil in my car!!! at this point im wondering if mazda is trying to seize my engine or what is going on. they say oops we better see whats going on come back tmrw morning and pick it up. next day they say its still undriveable and wait a week for part to arrive.

Now theyve got the wastegate actuator installed and theyre saying its still not fixed and i might need a new turbo? i really dont know what is going on here but nowhere online can i find a system too lean requiring the entire turbo to be replaced??!!! can someone please give me their thoughts i dont know whats going on. Mazda has admitted to breaking my vacuum hose and some solenoid during the diagnostics do you think theres foul play happening here because i am a woman? please help!

P0171 flipped the CEL on my 2011 Mazdaspeed3 (P0171 Confirmed, P0171 Pending, P0171). Turned out to be a slightly loose air intake hose clamp (where the hose connects to the engine air filter cover). Tightened it, checked screws on the MAF, CEL went off afterwards, pulled codes, only Confirmed code left. Cleared Confirmed code, been driving around, several drive cycles (No incomplete sensors) and all is well. At least it got me to replace the filters while I was at it.

I am having the same problem I do have and K&N filter but I have been using this filter in this vehicle for over 100k miles. should I change out both the filter and sensor?

I would recommend it. Both are fairly inexpensive and available at autoparts stores.

I had Mazda 3 GT 2004 (sold in 2015). I used to get codes p0101 and p0171. The engine light was turn off after changing the O2 Sensor, and than came back back in a month.

I do have 2010 Mazda 3 at the moment. I started getting the same p0101 and p0171 codes a month ago. I cleared the codes by removing the battery connectors. After a while later, only p0171 came back. Subsequently, I cleaned the air sensor, and than changed the air filter, and the light went off :) A week later, the engine light and the same code were back :) I just noticed tonight that on of the hose clamp was loosen a lot and tighten it. Light is gone after a couple min again :)) Lets see in a week. I have the code p0171 back again. One of the mecanic told me to replace the purge valve.. not sure what do anymore

P0171. I have replaced the front o2 sensor and the MAF. Clean air filter, no pcv leaks, no intake leaks. What's left? Somebody help me! Ok, so now I changed the FEE valve. The MIL light stayed off for 2 days and it's back on again.

Any other symptoms? The P0171 code means that there is more air than fuel in the mixture, since you have already check for intake leaks and replaced the MAF, then your next step is to check is if there is enough fuel. You could have clogged fuel injectors or bad fuel pump. Try adding some fuel additive to clean the fuel injectors.

Running fuel injector cleaner now. Trying to run some hi-revs to help clean the injectors. Hope it works!

Ther is one ithe symptom. When hot its hard to restart.

It may take a couple of week to completely clean the injectors. You could also have excessive carbon built up in the engine, the injector cleaner should also help with the the carbon built up.

I ran fuel injector cleaner for 3 weeks and the changed the FEE valve. Still getting the p0171 code.

According to a national database that we have access to, after the MAF and O2 sensors, the most likely causes that can trigger the P0171 code for your 2007 Mazda are:
- PCV Valve and hose
- Fuel Pump
- Intake Manifold Gasket

2013 Mazda CX-5 Skyactiv 2.0l --code P0171. Air filter cover was not put on correctly (tabs not in rear slots). Assume this was the issue. Always start with the most obvious.

please assist: 07 Mazda rx8. Changed: air filter, oil & filter, MAF sensor, (3) solenoid vales, cleaned the eccentric shaft position sensor and replaced cabin filters...and this P0171 will not go away. I checked all the connections & lines...everything looks the way it should be, and it runs and drives just fine through all gears and rpms too...I guess I could change front 02 sensor...I been over all the connections and did not find anything loose or not connected properly...I just cannot figure it out...please assist.

If there are no intake or exhaust leaks, and the MAF is new, then the next step is to replace the O2 sensor. Other problems are related to the fuel system, but you will notice a fuel smell or lack of power.

On most vehicles, there is no intake or exhaust leaks, then Mass Air Flow sensor (MAF) is the most common problem that will set the P0171 code. You could start by cleaning the MAF and replacing the air filter.

I'm sorry to hear you have those problems with your Mazda. Unfortunately, the Catalytic Converter is more than likely the cause of the P0421 code. You could try using high octane gas for a few weeks, sometimes that will clear the code.
