Thank you for a very informative post. I have a Nissan Qashqai (Rogue in the US) 2015 that came up with that same error. I checked the air filter and found many dead insects (Had a trip recently on a very warm day in the countryside had to wash the front of the car from dead bugs). Cleared the encasement and vacuum cleaned the filter then refitted. Deleted the error via a ODB reader. Working fine now for a couple of trips.
BTW, the air filter seems to be soaked in some kind of oil. Is it supposed to be like this or should I replace it with a new one. No sign of oil residue on either ducts around the filter so I figured it is in the construction of the filter.

The oil on the filter is normal. The oil helps trap the small particles. You should change the filter every 12K miles
