P0016 Chevrolet Code - Crankshaft Position - Intake Camshaft Position Not Plausible

I'll start this discussion. I'm getting the hated P0016 code on our 2004 Chevy Trailblazer. There is also some raddling in the lower end along with zero oil pressure at times. Kill it for a few minutes & oil pressure comes back. At only 1000,000 miles & never been mistreated, it is a real disappointment. I am thinking timing chain stretch or tensioner failure.

Yes, timing chain stretched it's probably the most likely cause. Start by checking the the position of the timing mark at top dead center

mine is throwing the code, and only experiencing problems between 1500-2000 rpms

I just had the timing chain replaced at the dealer because of code p0017 and now I bring it home check engine light back on and now throwing code p0016

I suggest taking your vehicle back to the dealer, it's possible that the chain was not properly installed or they may have damaged the sensor.

Do you happen to know the name of what sensor they may have damaged or where it would be located. Now they are telling me that it will cost another $5300 to do a complete tear down of the motor to find the problem when I didn't have this code before they fixed it.

Not exactly, it's possible that they didn't damage any parts, just that they didn't properly installed the timing chain.
Why was the timing chain replaced initially?
You should consider having another shop inspect your vehicle or even talking to a lawyer.

The check engine light came on and was throwing codes for the timing chain. Brought it to the dealer and they pulled up codes and replaced the timing chain because it was recalled. Paid almost $2000 dollars to have other stuff done. When my husband picked it up drove it literally 5 minutes to our house the light came back on and is now throwing the p0016 code which is was not before being fixed

My daughter just bought a 2017 Chevrolet Malibu .She calls today crying the cars check engine light just came on and the car is shaking like crazy and low oil light/pressure and radio keeps cutting out. Autozone scanned it and got P0016 code! Uglyness after reading this message board

Start by checking the engine oil. If the engine oil is OK, then it's time to take it to the dealer.

2012 Equanox suddenly would not stay on and engine missing, had to keep it on mid idle (2000rpm). Had code P0016 from autoparts scan. they suggested crank then cam sensors, (replaced them) still no fix. Auto repair shop suggested solenoids or bad timing chain, Opened up valve cover and could see timing chain had too much slack when turning crank by hand with bar. Apparently one of the sprockets (crank or cam) jumped a tooth or several and caused the sensors to uncorrespond to each other so the code was set suggesting a sensor failure. their is no way for the computer to know the timing chain is loose and off its mark, that requires a visual inspection.

well my 04 Trailblazer gets this code in the morning when cold, it then once warmed up the DTC will go off . With the scanner it will show the code was thrown after the last time cleared, but not in the history. and it will run most of the day with out tripping again.

So I'm wondering if this is a sign that the timing is ok, the chain, if not lined up should make "hard starts" or stall conditions, I recently bought it. so not aware of any work done, and it runs fine starts easy. after warmed up it does mis # 3, intermittently at Idle , but it doesn't lite the MIL. service engine light.

I can't help but think if timing chain was the issue in would not run like it does (good) most of the time, not throwing the P0016, except in the morning.

There are some tests that need to be done and the code needs to be more consistent to determine exactly what the problem is. According to a national database of repairs for the P0016 code on the 2004 Chevrolet Blazer, besides the CKP and CMP, the Ignition Distributor is the most common cause that sets the P0016 code.

Thats part of the PCM,..? I'll research that.

I have done the actuator test with a Snap-on Solus Ultra, the actual = the desired, and a little spike on the variance line corresponding to the changes, I believe that's good.

I apologize, I did the research for a 2004 Blazer, instead of Trailblazer.

For your vehicle, the Variable Valve Timing Control Solenoid and the Sensor are the most common problems but looks like you have already replaced those components. Unfortunately, I haven't had that problem before, but according to a national database of repairs, here is the list of the most common problems:

Thank you for that , I scanned the vehicle again this morning , about 12 seconds from ignition it showed the P0016 as a code although the MIL didn't light and after about 3-4 min. or 115-120 the DTC line on the scanner went to 0. So I cleared it (again). Then we drove it a couple of times total of 62mi. no code, and all but 1 (EVAP) OBD test were done & passed So took it in and passed the Smog.

So thanks again, I did change several parts, I can't be sure if any single one fixed it or the combination of the sum of parts is what did it . But its over for this registration period.
