Code P0016 Cadillac Description

The P0016 diagnostic trouble code (DTC) for Cadillac vehicles indicates that there is a discrepancy between the crankshaft position sensor and the intake camshaft position sensor. In simpler terms, the engine control module (ECM) is detecting that the timing between the crankshaft and the intake camshaft is not matching up as it should. This can lead to improper fuel delivery, ignition timing, and overall engine performance.

Technical Article: Diagnosing DTCs P0016 and P0018

If this Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) started after recent internal engine repairs, inspect for proper engine mechanical timing. With the camshaft cover removed and the #1 cylinder at top dead center, make sure that the darkened chain links are lined up with the alignment marks on the exhaust and intake cam sprockets.

If a P0016 is resetting without any engine performance concerns but the above information did not isolate a cause for the DTC, replace the Cam Phaser Actuator sprocket.

Discuss the causes and fixes for P0016 Cadillac OBDII Code

  • I replaced cam sensor bank 1 sensor a and no change, checked resistance of both cam vvrt actuators and both at 7.2 ohm which is same as new. Replaced bank 1 vvt actuator a and so far seems to be fixed

  • I hope that is the problem. Thanks for he information!!

  • Light back on 20 miles. Needs timing chain at 78k and not on the extended warranty

  • Does anyone know the camshaft sensor location for a Cadillac SRX 2010? Also, is there a fuse related to this sensor? Thanks

  • For your 2010 Cadillac SRX, the P0016 code is for the "Crankshaft Position Sensor - Intake Camshaft Position Not Plausible Bank 1".

  • Thanks! I am getting a p0016 and p0017 code. I respond when I have more information or if fixed

  • Put in sensor in that position(#8 on link below) but still getting reading for p0016 and p0017. So probably other sensor won't make a difference.

  • If you have both codes and the sensor didn't fix the problem, then you may have a problem with the timing chain or timing chain tensioner. Unfortunately, the timing chain and tensioner can prematurely fail on this vehicles.
