Since the exhaust valve timing control solenoid valve uses oil flow to control timing, dirty oil can cause the valve to stuck open or close. Before replacing the valve, change engine oil and filter and reset engine code.

When is the Code Detected?

When there is a gap between angle of target and phase-control angle degree, the valve will stop working and the ECM will trigger the P0014 code.

Discuss the causes and fixes for P0014 Infiniti OBDII Code

  • I have the p0014 and p0024 code. I did the oil change this morning reset the engine code. They light came back on before I got home

  • What model and year is your Infiniti? If the problem was that the solenoids got stuck due to the dirty oil, it may take some time to start working. Try driving your Infiniti for a couple of week and if the problem persist you could try changing the engine oil again or replacing the valve.

  • Thanks for taking time out to respond. I have a 2008 G35x. (1) I read on another website that adding additives like seaform to the engine before an oil change can help. What is your thought on this? (2) What is an Exhaust Valve Timing Re-Learn? Another website suggested a re-learn after the oil change. Do you agree?

  • Yes seafoam or any other oil additive could help, Unfortunately the only way to relearn the valve is with the Nissan Consult, and only the dealer or anyone with the Consult could do that. Our shop specialized on Infiniti vehicles, we have the Nissan Consult, and I never had any luck relarning the valve. My advice don't waste your money with that.

  • Thanks again for your response. Is there any adverse effect If I continue to drive it till I am able to get it fixed?

  • No. May have some engine performance problems and will fail the smog test, other than that no other problems.

  • I have these same two codes, and now my car will randomly shut off, which seems to happen at low RPM/idle times. I haven't tried the oil change route yet, but taking the car to a local shop, the guy wants at least 2500 to open up the valve timing cover and check my cam shafts. I read that also replacing both Valve Timing Covers, then doing a exahust valve relearn should fix the issue. Any help or advice is truly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

  • What model and year is your Infiniti? why should even considering the repair? start by changing the engine oil and make sure you use Nissan Ester Oil

  • 2007 G35 Sedan Journey. So i will start with oil change. Will I need to run a valve exhaust re-learn? Thank you.

  • You have to perform the exhaust valve relearn procedure only if you replace the valve. If changing the engine oil fixes the problem, then you don't have to do anything.

FYI, if you change the engine oil periodically, then there is a big chance that the problem is a component problem (either the valve or the camshaft position sensor). If you don't change the engine periodically, then the dirty oil may have caused the problem. Sometimes it may take a couple of oil changes to fix the problem, and sometimes the oil sludge is so bad, that could cause the valve to fail.

  • The current oil in my vehicle is Mobil 1, which was done about 5k miles ago. Before that, I had regular oil used, which went about 5,000 miles also. Before that though, I had Mobil 1 sitting in my engine for about 13k mile. Is Nissan Ester oil, the only recommended oil you would suggest to use in hopes to fixing this issue?

  • Nissan Ester oil or Red Line are the brands that seems to work.

  • I have both P0014 and P0024 on my 2007 G35x with 147k miles on it. It seems to drive fine, and according to my OBDII, I've gone 240 miles with the two codes. What's the key to fixing this problem quickly? I bought the car since it was on the cheaper side and I only planned to drive it for the couple years id be here in Hawaii. So far I've done two oil changes, each at 3500 miles. Should I change my oil more frequently like in 2000 mile intervals? I run Mobil 1 5w-30 btw. Thanks.

  • You could try to change the oil often, but if that doesn't work, you have to Exhaust valve timing control solenoid valve. Unfortunately there is no other quick way.

  • Where can I purchase the oil control valve and how do I know which side is the one I need? I have a Infiniti g35 sedan 2008

  • P0014 code is for the "Bank 1". On your 08 G35, the Bank 1 is the passenger side. Other than the dealer I don't know any other place you can get the valve.

  • So is that considered the right side?

  • The side where #1 coil is. Right or left depends where are you located.

  • About 1,300 miles into oil change, in which the car was driving great until this last weekend. I am not sure if it was due to the hot weather, but the car stalled 3 times. It seems to happen when I am at a full stop going up hill. When releasing the brake and initiating the gas, the engine stutters, then dies.

  • You got the same codes? Sounds more like Camshaft Position Sensors and/or Crankshaft position sensor.

  • Yes, the same codes are there. P0014 and P0024

  • At this point I recommend replacing both Camshaft Position Sensors, I don't any other component that could trigger the codes and stalling the engine.

  • Thank you for the recommendation. Would you happen to know the part numbers?

  • Part Number: 23731-JA11A

Please keep in mind that my diagnosis is just base in your description. The sensor its probably the most likely, easier and less expensive part you could replace.

  • 09 fx35. wife went a long time without telling me oil change was due because it was dirty & she didn't want me to see it so dirty on the inside. so, now spits & sputters. 10,000 miles on the Freaking oil. the codes p0014 & P0024 are on. did an oil change yesterday with the mixed natural/synthetic oil. ran ok for a day, spits & sputters again. codes back on. now what & where is the part for the replacement

  • The parts that need to be replace are the Valve timing control cover, both covers are on front of the engine. Unfortunately replacing the covers are not that easy, and the camshaft sprockets may need to be replace as well. At this point I recommend to have the dealer or an experienced Infiniti tech inspect the vehicle for you.

  • I have p0014 on my infinit g35 coupe manual transmission 6 speed with 100512 mileage nad the code reads p0014- exhaust camshaft position timing over-advanced (bank 1) what could be the possible cause

  • What year is your G35?
You probably have to replace the Exhaust valve timing control solenoid valve.

  • 2006

  • Yes, the Exhaust valve timing control solenoid valve it's most likely the cause of the code. Also make sure the engine oil is clean and you are using the correct oil weight.

  • Did u fixed the issue? I'm having the same problem on my fx . Tks in advance

  • About how much does that procedure cost im having the same problem

  • You could start by changing the engine oil and that's not expensive. If you have to replace the valve, then that depends and the model and year of your Infiniti.

  • everything on this page including the comments are so helpful. thank you!

I've always been pretty regular about oil changes, I have an 08 g35 jouney with about only 107k miles, i usually changed oil about 4kmiles, one time it went to 6kmiles when I was very busy (a long time ago). the manual says 7.5k miles for synthetic-blend oil.

first time this code came on was right AFTER I changed the oil, I used full synthetic (I can't remember if I switched from synthetic blend during that oil change or the one before that). I reset the code and it was fine for about 4k miles, but then the P0024 code came on. I reset again and I immediately change the oil again, now about 2-3k miles later both codes are on.

currently the car runs Very smooth and powerful, no problem at all.

the car did have some hesitation and slightly rough idle when stopped at lights recently, but about 1k mile ago, I cleaned the throttle body and the mass air filter and it solved this problem; car runs very well. about 1k miles later, both codes came up again.

what do you recommend me do this time given my car runs so well. try the Nissan Ester oil? or a few more oil changes? should i take it to an infiniti dealer (expensive) or normal mechanic is fine? I ask this because i read that i may need to change the VTC cover x2 and I read the part about how the exhaust valve relearn is very difficult even with the Nissan Consult.

    Thank you!

  • After reading the first two paragraph I was already thinking on recommending the Nissan Ester Oil.

You can have any mechanic do the oil change, you can also use Red Line Oil, which is less expensive and is as good as the Nissan Ester Oil.

  • Thank you!!

  • Btw, when should I do my next oil change after using Red Line? 3-5k miles, or longer? Should I continue using red line or go back to mobile 1 synthetic if the light doesn't come back on?

  • It depends how hard you drive your G, if you don't drive hard you can go for 5K, but if you do, then 3K miles.

According to the factory you should always use Ester Oil, or equivalent (Red Line). Not all the G have problems with the VTC, my doesn't and I use Mobil 1, but my customers that have the same problem always use Red Line.

  • Thank you!

  • Hi, the P0024 code came on again, less than 2k after changing to Red Line. The car runs perfect.

I guess it's time to take it to a mechanic?

should i take it to an infiniti dealer (expensive) or normal mechanic is fine? I ask this because i read that i may need to change the

    Image

Click here to enlarge image VTC cover x2 and I read the part about how the exhaust valve relearn is very difficult even with the Nissan Consult.

  • The dealer or an independent mechanic with a Nissan CONSULT, there is a test that needs to be done with the Nissan CONSULT to find out if the problem are the just the intake valve solenoids or/and the sprockets.

If you have no other problems, you should wait 2-3 oil changes. Replacing the sprockets and solenoids can get a bit expensive, last one we did at the shop was close to $1400 for one side.

  • Thank you again!

Should I do the oil change now at 2k miles? If so, and if the light turns on again in the future, I should just do the oil change even if it's only 1-2k miles?

I appreciate your guidance very much, you've been so helpful!

  • Yes. Sometimes it takes 2-3 oil changes to clean the valves. I think the problem is just dirt on the valves, if you had bad valves or sprockets, then you'll also have engine performance problems.

  • Thank you!

  • how much would it cost to fix it?

  • It depends on what exactly the problem is, could be just an oil change and an oil change is around $50, but if the problem is the valve could be around $300. What model and year is your Infiniti?

  • I have a 2012 Infiniti fx35 with both codes P0014 and P0024, miles 123488... is there a quick fix? My car would shut off in stop and go traffic, also it feels like I’m losing power sometimes when driving, like when you running low on gas...

  • You could start by changing the engine oil and filter. Make sure you use 5W-30

  • When was the last time you change the engine oil and filter? You could start by changing the engine oil and filter. Make sure you use 5W-30

  • I can’t remember, I don’t have a sticker, a family member does my oil change, but I rest the notification every time and try to stay close the notification of the oil change needed. I’ve changed my oil many times and filter using 5w-30 but it don’t help. Took it to a few shops and they could never really tell me what the issues are but they reset the check engine light only for it to return after driving a few miles. I’ve been driving around with the check engine light on for over a year now

  • If you have already try changing the engine oil and clearing the code, but the codes keeps coming back, then you have to have the dealer or an Infiniti specialist shop do some testing to determine if the problem are the "Exhaust valve timing control position sensors" or "Exhaust valve timing control magnet retarder". If the problem is the magnet retarder, it requires removing the front timing chain covers.

  • Im getting codes P0024 P0014 P0021 P0011 on my 2007 Infiniti g35x with about 100k miles. The car sometimes fails to start, sometimes it also idles between 1-2k rpms and it hesitates occasionally when the gas is pushed. what advice do you have for me ? Thanks

  • It's unlikely that all Solenoid Valves will fail at the same time. How is the engine oil level and condition?

On some G35, the rear timing cover gasket fails, which compromises the function of the solenoid's valves. Unfortunately, replacing the gasket requires removing the timing chain, which is a very complicated and time-consuming repair.

  • Good afternoon friend I have an infiniti 2008 g35 sedan with the code problem p0014 p0024 I just bought it 3 days ago it handles very well and works very well but the check engine is on because of those codes but I do not know how to solve them I already made the change of oil put 5w-30

  • Sometimes it takes a few days for the oil to get into the Valve Timing Control Solenoid Valve and you may even have to change the engine oil a couple of times, but if the problem persists, you must replace the Solenoid Valves to fix the problem.
How it takes for the codes to come back after you clear them?
