Hello, I have a 2010 avalanche. Stuck in 4 wheel drive. Selector switch is 2 high,auto,4 high. Switch is set to 2 high but 4 high light is on and in 4 wheel drive. For 2014-2017 Chev, GMC, Cadillac with RPO Code; NQH transfer case (you can see if you have the NQH on the Service Parts Identification label. In the glove box?).
Check the software version of the Transfer Case Control Module per "static.nhtsa.gov PIP5369B".
The original software had tolerances to tight between the Range Actuator and Transfer Case Position Sensor's. The updated software allows for more variation between the two sensors. PIP5369B spells out the how, when and why for this software update.-
Excellent addition. That is a very important point for anyone diagnosing C0398 on GM trucks and SUVs with the NQH transfer case.
On many 2014–2017 Chevrolet, GMC, and Cadillac models, the original Transfer Case Control Module (TCCM) software was known to set C0398 too easily because the calibration tolerances between the range actuator and transfer case position sensors were overly sensitive.
GM addressed this in bulletin PIP5369B with updated TCCM software that widens the acceptable correlation range between the actuator and sensor readings.
That means some vehicles were getting:
• C0398 codes
• Service 4WD messages
• Random transfer case concernseven though the actuator and transfer case were mechanically fine.
Very good point also about checking for RPO code NQH on the Service Parts Identification label (commonly in the glove box on those years).
Before replacing:
• transfer case actuators,
• position sensors,
• or the transfer case itself,owners and technicians should absolutely verify the TCCM software level and check for available updates first.
