Code C0237 Chevrolet Description
The C0237 code for Chevrolet indicates an erratic rear speed signal, which means that the vehicle's onboard computer is detecting inconsistencies or fluctuations in the speed signal coming from the rear wheels. This issue can affect the vehicle's performance by causing problems with the anti-lock braking system (ABS), traction control system, stability control, and other related systems. The erratic speed signal can lead to incorrect readings and responses from these systems, compromising the overall safety and handling of the vehicle. If not addressed, this issue can result in reduced braking efficiency, traction loss, stability issues, and potential safety hazards.
Common Causes of C0237 Chevrolet
- Faulty wheel speed sensors.
- Damaged wiring or connectors in the rear speed sensor circuit.
- Corrosion or debris affecting the speed sensor's signal.
- Malfunctioning ABS module.
- Issues with the vehicle's wheel bearings or hub assemblies.
Symptoms of C0237 Chevrolet
- ABS warning light illuminated on the dashboard.
- Traction control system engagement when not needed.
- Erratic behavior of the stability control system.
- Inaccurate speed readings on the instrument cluster.
- Difficulty maintaining control while braking or accelerating.
How to Fix C0237 Chevrolet
- Use a diagnostic scan tool to retrieve the specific trouble code and identify the affected wheel speed sensor.
- Inspect the wiring and connectors for any damage, corrosion, or loose connections.

Frequently Asked Questions about C0237 Chevrolet Code
1. What does the OBDII code C0237 mean on a Chevrolet?
C0237 indicates an "Erratic Rear Speed Signal," meaning the vehicle's Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM) is receiving inconsistent or intermittent signals from the rear wheel speed sensor(s).
2. What are the common symptoms of code C0237 in a Chevrolet?
Symptoms may include the ABS warning light turning on, traction control becoming disabled, unexpected ABS activation during braking, or inconsistent speedometer readings.
3. What causes the C0237 code to appear on a Chevrolet?
Common causes include a faulty rear wheel speed sensor, damaged wiring or connectors, corrosion at the sensor connection, or issues with the ABS tone ring.
4. How can I diagnose the C0237 code on my Chevrolet?
Start by scanning the vehicle with an OBDII scanner to confirm the code, then visually inspect the rear wheel speed sensors, wiring, and connectors for physical damage, wear, or corrosion.
5. Can a faulty ABS tone ring cause the C0237 code?
Yes, if the ABS tone ring is damaged, dirty, or misaligned, it can cause erratic signals from the wheel speed sensor, triggering this code.
6. How do I fix the C0237 code on a Chevrolet?
Repairs may include replacing a faulty rear wheel speed sensor, repairing or replacing damaged wiring/connectors, cleaning or replacing the ABS tone ring, or, in rare cases, replacing the EBCM.
7. Is it safe to drive with the C0237 code active?
While the vehicle may still be drivable, the ABS and traction control systems may not function correctly, potentially increasing stopping distances or reducing stability in slippery conditions.
8. How much does it cost to fix the C0237 code on a Chevrolet?
Repair costs can vary, but replacing a rear wheel speed sensor typically costs between $100 and $300, including labor, while more complex issues like EBCM replacement can exceed $1,000.
9. Can a low battery cause the C0237 code?
A low or weak battery can sometimes cause electrical issues, but it's more likely that the code is related to specific sensor or wiring problems.
10. Will clearing the C0237 code with a scanner fix the issue?
Clearing the code will only reset the warning temporarily. The underlying problem must be diagnosed and repaired to prevent the code from returning.
Discuss the causes and fixes for C0237 Chevrolet OBDII Code

You should start by inspecting the wheel speed sensor on the rear wheels. May have to replace the sensors.

2002 Trailblazer. I have checked the codes before and this did not show up. I told her that when the check engine light came on to go right to a auto parts place and have the codes read. They read C0237. From my research it looks like the speed sensor could be the problem. Might be able to fix it by cleaning the corrosion under the sensor. Thing is, most with
this problem state a ABS light coming on. I don't think that is the case with ours. Just the check engine light. -
For the C0237 code, the factory service manual does not specified which side could be the bad one. The manual recommends checking both sensors.

2003 Chevy Suburban gave me this code with a check engine light on. Is there an easy fix to this one?
-
Do you have 2WD or 4WD? and what the engine size?
I doubt there is an easy fix for the problem, unless the sensor is disconnected or loose.
-
First thing you need to do is check the wheel speed sensors. Check for damage wires (number 2 on the image below) or wheel suspension components
