Code B0087:02 Description
The B0087:02 diagnostic trouble code (DTC) indicates that there is a short to ground in the left rear side impact sensor circuit. Side impact sensors are crucial components of a vehicle's safety system, as they detect impacts on the side of the vehicle and trigger the deployment of side airbags to protect occupants in the event of a collision. When a short to ground occurs in the left rear side impact sensor circuit, it can compromise the sensor's ability to accurately detect impacts, potentially leading to improper deployment or non-deployment of the side airbags.
Common Causes of B0087:02
- Wiring harness damage or chafing leading to a short to ground.
- Corrosion or poor connections in the side impact sensor circuit.
- Faulty left rear side impact sensor.
- Impact or collision that damaged the sensor or its wiring.
- Electrical issues such as a blown fuse or relay affecting the sensor circuit.
Symptoms of B0087:02
- Illumination of the airbag warning light on the dashboard.
- Inability to deploy side airbags in a side impact collision.
- Erratic or inconsistent deployment of side airbags.
- Diagnostic trouble code B0087:02 stored in the vehicle's onboard computer system.
How to Fix B0087:02
- Begin by conducting a thorough visual inspection of the left rear side impact sensor circuit, checking for any visible damage, corrosion, or loose connections.
- Use a multimeter to test the continuity and resistance of the sensor circuit, identifying the location of the short to ground.
- If a short to ground is found, repair or replace the damaged wiring harness or connectors as necessary.
- Test the left rear side impact sensor itself for proper functionality, replacing it if it is determined to be faulty.
- Clear the diagnostic trouble code from the vehicle's computer system and perform a test drive to ensure that the issue has been resolved and the airbag system is functioning correctly.
Cost to Fix B0087:02
The typical repair costs for addressing a left rear side impact sensor short to ground can vary depending on the extent of the damage and the specific components that require replacement. In general, the cost of parts for a new side impact sensor can range from $100 to $300, while the labor costs for diagnosis and repair can add an additional $100 to $200. Overall, the total repair cost for this issue may fall within the range of $200 to $500, but it is advisable to consult with a qualified mechanic or auto repair shop for a more accurate estimate based on the vehicle's make and model, as well as the local labor rates. Keep in mind that additional costs may apply if other related components need to be replaced or repaired.

Precautions for SRS “AIR BAG” and “SEAT BELT PRE-TENSIONER” Service
- Never probe the electrical connectors on air bag, side air curtain modules or seat belts.
- Never disassemble or tamper with safety belt buckle/retractor pretensioners, adaptive load limiting retractors, safety belt inflators, or probe the electrical connectors.
- Do not use electrical test equipment to check SRS circuits unless instructed to in this Service Manual.
- Before servicing the SRS, turn ignition switch OFF, disconnect both battery cables and wait at least 3 minutes. For approximately 3 minutes after the cables are removed, it is still possible for the air bag and seat belt pre-tensioner to deploy. Therefore, do not work on any SRS connectors or wires until at least 3 minutes have passed.
Failure to follow this instruction may result in the accidental deployment of these modules, which increases the risk of serious personal injury or death.
