Code B0086:02 Description
The B0086:02 diagnostic trouble code indicates that there is a short to ground in the right front side impact sensor circuit. The side impact sensor is a crucial component of the vehicle's safety system, designed to detect side collisions and deploy the side airbags to protect the occupants. A short to ground in the sensor circuit can prevent the sensor from functioning properly, potentially leading to the airbags not deploying in the event of a side impact.
Common Causes of B0086:02
- Wiring harness damage or chafing leading to a short to ground.
- Corrosion in the sensor connector causing a poor connection.
- Faulty side impact sensor.
- Water intrusion into the sensor causing a short circuit.
- Impact or collision damaging the sensor or its wiring.
Symptoms of B0086:02
- Airbag warning light illuminated on the dashboard.
- Inability to deploy side airbags in a side collision.
- Diagnostic trouble code B0086:02 stored in the vehicle's computer.
- Loss of communication with the right front side impact sensor.
- Erratic behavior of the airbag system.
How to Fix B0086:02
- Begin by diagnosing the specific cause of the short to ground in the right front side impact sensor circuit using a multimeter and wiring diagram.
- Inspect the wiring harness for damage, chafing, or corrosion, and repair or replace as necessary.
- Check the sensor connector for corrosion or poor connections, cleaning or replacing as needed.
- Test the right front side impact sensor for proper operation and replace if faulty.
- Clear the diagnostic trouble code from the vehicle's computer and perform a test to ensure the issue has been resolved.
Cost to Fix B0086:02
The typical repair costs for addressing a right front side impact sensor short to ground issue can vary depending on the specific cause of the problem and the vehicle's make and model. In general, parts for this repair may cost between $100 and $300, while labor costs can range from $150 to $300. Overall, the total repair cost could fall between $250 and $600. However, it's important to note that these are rough estimates, and actual costs may vary based on factors such as location, vehicle type, and labor rates at the auto repair shop. It's recommended to obtain quotes from local shops for a more accurate cost estimate.

Precautions for SRS “AIR BAG” and “SEAT BELT PRE-TENSIONER” Service
- Never probe the electrical connectors on air bag, side air curtain modules or seat belts.
- Never disassemble or tamper with safety belt buckle/retractor pretensioners, adaptive load limiting retractors, safety belt inflators, or probe the electrical connectors.
- Do not use electrical test equipment to check SRS circuits unless instructed to in this Service Manual.
- Before servicing the SRS, turn ignition switch OFF, disconnect both battery cables and wait at least 3 minutes. For approximately 3 minutes after the cables are removed, it is still possible for the air bag and seat belt pre-tensioner to deploy. Therefore, do not work on any SRS connectors or wires until at least 3 minutes have passed.
Failure to follow this instruction may result in the accidental deployment of these modules, which increases the risk of serious personal injury or death.
