Code B0085:71 Description
The B0085:71 diagnostic trouble code (DTC) indicates that there is invalid data coming from the left front side impact sensor in the vehicle. Side impact sensors are crucial components of a vehicle's safety system, as they are responsible for detecting impacts on the side of the vehicle and triggering the deployment of the side airbags to protect occupants in the event of a collision. When the side impact sensor sends invalid data, it means that the sensor is not functioning properly and may not be able to accurately detect side impacts.
Common Causes of B0085:71
- Malfunctioning left front side impact sensor.
- Wiring issues such as a short circuit or open circuit.
- Damage to the sensor due to impact or corrosion.
- Faulty connections or poor grounding of the sensor.
- Issues with the airbag control module.
Symptoms of B0085:71
- Airbag warning light illuminated on the dashboard.
- Side airbags not deploying in a side impact collision.
- Fault codes related to the side impact sensor stored in the vehicle's computer.
- Inconsistent or erratic behavior of the side airbag system.
How to Fix B0085:71
- Begin by diagnosing the specific cause of the invalid data from the left front side impact sensor using a diagnostic scan tool.
- Inspect the wiring harness connected to the sensor for any signs of damage, corrosion, or loose connections.
- Test the left front side impact sensor for proper functionality and replace it if necessary.
- Clear the fault codes from the vehicle's computer and perform a test to ensure that the sensor is now sending valid data.
- If the issue persists, further diagnosis may be required to identify any underlying problems with the airbag control module or other related components.
Cost to Fix B0085:71
The typical repair costs for addressing the B0085:71 DTC can vary depending on the specific cause of the issue and the vehicle's make and model. In general, replacing a side impact sensor can cost anywhere from $100 to $300, including parts and labor. Additional costs may be incurred if there are wiring issues or other related components that need to be replaced. It's important to note that diagnosis time and labor rates at auto repair shops can vary, so it's advisable to check with local shops for a more accurate estimate.

Precautions for SRS “AIR BAG” and “SEAT BELT PRE-TENSIONER” Service
- Never probe the electrical connectors on air bag, side air curtain modules or seat belts.
- Never disassemble or tamper with safety belt buckle/retractor pretensioners, adaptive load limiting retractors, safety belt inflators, or probe the electrical connectors.
- Do not use electrical test equipment to check SRS circuits unless instructed to in this Service Manual.
- Before servicing the SRS, turn ignition switch OFF, disconnect both battery cables and wait at least 3 minutes. For approximately 3 minutes after the cables are removed, it is still possible for the air bag and seat belt pre-tensioner to deploy. Therefore, do not work on any SRS connectors or wires until at least 3 minutes have passed.
Failure to follow this instruction may result in the accidental deployment of these modules, which increases the risk of serious personal injury or death.
